CHANGING THE FACE OF EDUCATION. (As reported by the new vision...)
Today, Uganda is faced with massive unemployment and a supply - driven education curricular that does not address the needs of the rapidly growing popualtion.
It was against this background that Nserester Complex international was established 10 years ago. It has transformed education from the traditional (academic) form of instruction, to a more intergrated vocationalised approach. The centre asssists needy children and orphans. Students get elementary education intergrated with technical skills, computer science comptence and driving lessons.
Located in Nyendo trading centre, a few meters away from Masaka Municipality, the institution emphasizes academic excellence and skills development to enable students become self - supportive.
Nserester Complex comprises a modern Nursery and Primary school, with agricultural practice and cookery skills. The secondary level has vocational subjects.There is also a technical college with more than 20 subjects. It also has a business school, a Nursery Teacher's College, an institute for Hotel Management and Catering, as well as a community Polytechnic.
Currently, the Institution boasts of 416 graduates employed in various pursuing degree programmes in local universities, while 51 have obtained scholarships in foreign universites.
Because of the unique curriculum, the school has attracted high ranking personalities to learn from its educational model. "I always ask people to visit Nserester and caution them to emualte that kind of education, "remarked Edward Ssekandi, the Speaker of Parliament.
"I wish every school in Africa buys the Nserester mission." Said Vincent Ssempijja, the Masaka LC5 Chairman.
"When writing the curriculum for community for Community Polytechnic, Comprehensive secondary and Vocation Secondary, we refer to Nserester Complex as our model, " said Engineer Francis Okinyal, the Minister of education Commissioner for business, Vocational and technical education and training.
According to Nserester's Head teacher Mr. Joachim Malinzi, students at the Institution are given opportunity to attempt different curricular to find what is suitable to them. At the institution, students are given options to pursue academics, seek employment or become self-employed after Form Four. At "A" Level students take computer technology as an added subject, while others specialize in technical or business courses. On the other hand, students in the community polytechnic section pursue two technical subjects, plus intergrated Science, English and Mathematics.
Currently, the institution handles students from over 11 countries. Students who excel are offered scholarships to pursue undergraduate and post graduate courses in various universities. At the beginning of this year, the Director sent eight students to universities of Boden, Hofors and Arvik in Sweden, through Swedish International Development Aid (SIDA). The school arranges exchange programmes through SIDA.
The Uganda British Teacher's Association has also organised exchange programmes for the teachers. Nserester has opened a number of charitable institutions and organisations to cater for the social and spiritual well - being of its students.
Voice of peace, located at Namagoma - Nabingo was established by the Management of the school to fight for children and women's rights. It is co-ordinates local and national scholarships , wards and bursaries for the orphans and needy chidlren.
Nserester complex international is in Nyendo Masaka offering all O’ level subjects, one technical or business subject of choice, Computer Science and skills, driving skills such that a student at the end of successful course leaves with UCE (O’ Level) certificate, computer certificate, Driving Permit, Technical or Business Certificates as guided by the students careers master.
